Old City Cemetery Museums & Arboretum
Established in 1806, this restored public cemetery is a Virginia Historic Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places. Interpretive plaques, signage, and brochures are available throughout the 26-acre site. Features include a Confederate Section with over 2,200 graves of soldiers from 14 states, significant African-American history, and four small museums equipped with push-button audio: Pest House Medical Museum, Hearse House and Caretakers Museum, Station House Museum, and Chapel and Columbarium. The cemetery is an arboretum of historic plants with specimens botanically labeled, including over 200 antique roses, medicinal herbs, butterfly garden and pond, shrub garden, antique daffodils, and native and ornamental trees. The site hosts an annual Rose Festival enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. The Cemetery Center is open Monday-Saturday, 11:00-3:00, and by appointment, and includes a display of 19th-and 20th-century mourning traditions, a gift shop, staff offices, archives, and research library.
