A visit to Lynchburg and Central Virginia would not be complete without touring many of our 70 attractions and sites within an hour drive. Here you will find five of our most popular tour packages. Al of our itineraries are easily a day long adventure with suggestions to expand your touring if time allows.

Our area boasts some of the most breathtaking autumn colors on the East Coast, and the Harvest Tour offers a unique way to enjoy them. This beautiful “fall foliage” tour is available Monday through Friday during the months of September and October. With planned stops at Old City Cemetery, Point of Honor, Oak Ridge Estates, Drumheller’s Orchard and Mountain Cover Vineyards & Winegarden, you will have the opportunity to soak in local history, enjoy a hayride, pick your own apples and taste popular area wines.

What better way to absorb the rich history of Central Virginia than with our Historic Homes Tour? Between Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest, Point of Honor and a walking or driving tour of Lynchburg’s seven Historic Districts, you will emerge an expert on the notable homes and breathtaking architecture of the Hill City. But don’t stop there. Just up the road in Altavista is Avoca Museum, home site of the revolutionary patriot, Colonel Charles Lynch. Or take a 45-minute drive to Patrick Henry's Red Hill Estate.

From the Civil War to World War II and beyond, both war and peace are engrained in our area’s fabric. From Old City Cemetery to Fort Early, Historic Sandusky and other stops on the Lynchburg Civil War driving tour, you will learn about Lynchburg’s role during the Civil War. Then visit nearby Appomattox to see the site where our nation reunited-The Appomattox Court House National Historical Park. Refresh your mind and relax at the historic Babcock House for a lunch surrounded by period antiques, before taking a beautiful drive to Bedford to see the moving National D-Day Memorial. History buffs can then complete the tour with a Shopping Stop at any one of the many antique venues.

The African American culture has deep roots in Central Virginia. This is a tour not to be missed, starting with a visit to the home of internationally acclaimed poet and founder of Lynchburg’s NAACP chapter, Anne Spencer. The Legacy Museum of African American History is a must see on this tour, and just around the corner take a self-guided tour through the popular Black History quarter mile walk at Old City Cemetery. Enjoy lunch at any one of Lynchburg’s fine restaurants before heading to one of the nation’s oldest black colleges, Virginia University of Lynchburg. Finish your official tour with a drive through the seven Historic Districts of the Hill City. You may also expand your tour to include the nearby Booker T. Washington National Monument.

Our area brings Civil War aficionados from far and wide, and with good reason. The end of the Civil War happened right in our backyard on April 9, 1865 when General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant at the original village of Appomattox Courthouse, now the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park. During the Civil War History Tour, you can visit the McLean House, the very spot of the surrender. Learn more about Lynchburg's role in the war as a supply depot and hospital center with a tour of the seven Historic Districts, The Lynchburg Museum and Point of Honor. Finally, your tour wraps up with two educational stops at Fort Early and Sandusky, highlighting the Battle of Lynchburg.
