Point of Honor

During the Civil War, Point of Honor was the home of Col. Robert and Narcissa Owen. The hospitality of Point of Honor was often extended to Confederate officials and army officers visiting Lynchburg.

On the eve of the Battle of Lynchburg in 1864, Col. Owen’s wife, Narcissa Chisolm Owen, welcomed two Confederate stragglers onto the porch. After offering them some food she attempted to reassure the pair that Lynchburg would be safe from the Union army. She described the Confederate reinforcements that were on the way to defend the city. These stragglers were in fact Union spies who promptly reported Mrs. Owen’s exaggerations to General Hunter, who subsequently withdrew from Lynchburg convinced he was heavily outnumbered.

Built in 1815 by Dr. George Cabell, Sr., friend and personal physician of Patrick Henry, Point of Honor has been carefully restored and is open the public daily, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Closed major holidays. Admission.
