Quaker Meeting House
(South River Meeting House)

The high ground surrounding this Quaker church is where Confederate cavalry fought the first elements of Hunter’s advancing army on June 17, 1864. The church was abandoned in the 1840’s and was in ruins at the time of the battle. Dismounted Confederate cavalry troopers positioned themselves in the ruins of the church and along the fences of the ridge line. Following the battle Confederate forces fell back to the defense line set up at Forts McCausland and Early. That evening the Union army camped in this area and renewed their advance to Lynchburg the next morning.

The meeting house has been restored and is available for tours by appointment.
