Historic Sandusky

Built in 1808 by Richmond merchant Charles Johnston, Sandusky is one of the finest examples of Federal style architecture in Virginia’s Piedmont region. During the Civil War it was owned by Major George C. Hutter, a retired army officer, whose three sons served as officers in the Confederate army.

During the June 17-18, 1864, Battle of Lynchburg Sandusky was seized by General David Hunter and used as Union army headquarters. Two future presidents, Rutherford B. Hayes and William McKinley were on Hunter’s staff at the time. Union signal officers climbed onto the roof of the house to use it as a signal station and to observe the battle’s progress.

A field hospital was set up in the barn, which no longer stands, located behind the main house. After the close of battle, nearly 100 wounded and dying Union soldiers were left in the barn; a handful were buried on the property. The property is open to the public during daylight hours; The Sandusky House is open on selected occasions. Please call ahead.
